Technology

Networks

The Samsung ITD is a division of the SEA (Samsung Electronics America) in the United States. Samsung is known to use the WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) which connects two or more devices especially when using wireless distribution method. It also uses the Ethernet Media converter. Samsung has introduced DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) which actively promotes the wireless and wired networks which are used by most products produced by Samsung and these include personal computers, consumer electronics products and mobile devices.

Samsung has adopted the Serial ATA interface which has developed up to the third generation. It has a very high data transfer rate of almost 300MB/s. It also applies to much more sophisticated network storages and servers. It also has dual host topology which removes the shot-down time especially at the time when the system is able to detect errors. The serial ATA is scalable (Panos, 2003). Samsung is also known to use the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) which is known to be a compact video/audio interface used for transmitting the uncompressed digital data.

Samsung Information Technology uses the Samsung Media Studio 5 application which is known to be a convenient especially when using video playback feature. It is also known to use Mobile Media API (MMAPI) for most of the Samsung specific devices. This MMAPI supports all multimedia applications to play and record audio, take pictures and to play video (Information Gatekeepers Inc., 2006).

Samsung Electronics has a lot of products that need to have connection. They work through a wireless communication media known as Satellite. Wireless Communication media transmits information through the air. Samsung especially works through communication satellites. Communication Satellites are microwave repeaters in space. Using Satellites gives Samsung the ability to connect to the networks across the world. Samsung Networks is the leading IP communication services provider with a high-speed global network. This network through satellite communication allows to service more than 10,000 corporate customers in Korea and around the world.

Samsung has several products that are connected to a wifi connection. Wifi is a standard for transmitting information in the form of radio waves over distances up to several miles. The newest product that Samsung is promoting is their LED wireless TV. The Television connects to the internet and is capable to do everything a regular laptop or notebook can do.Wifi is an alliance that provides testing and certification so that the device communicates properly. The Wifi runs at 11Mbps and 54 Mbps.

Samsung does use voice over IP; voice over IP is transmitting a voice telephone call over a computer data network. It allows you to send voice communication over the internet and avoid the toll charges that you would normally receive from your long distance carrier.

The four principles of network security are: confidentiality, authenticity, integrity, and availability. Samsung applies these principles by allowing their customers to be secure in knowing that their information is always confidential. They make sure the information that they give out is authentic. They operate under the core value that in operating in an ethical way is the foundation of their business and that everything they do is guided by a moral compass which ensures fairness and respect for all. Finally they make information available to all.

Databases and Data Warehouses

Samsung Electronics is creating a digital world of better communication and is also known for slogans such as “Samsung Digital: Everyone’s Invited”. Samsung is looking and is focusing on becoming the leader in the age of digital convergence. Therefore the company started to use customer files. Customer files keep a customer in their records so that the company knows who to target their sales to. The customer files are also used to send customer certain incentives (coupons).

To keep control of the company different databases are used. Product database is used to show change in price and how many product were individually sold over a certain period of time. Advertising database in the corporation is there to show when it is time to change your advertisements also how much money you have spent on advertising in different areas. Different areas such as radio, TV, magazines and billboards are included. Finally there is a customer database. This database shows where and what the customers are purchasing and how they are paying for it.

Database are now created so that files and reports are easier to read and organized. Samsung came up with their own Database Software that they use throughout their products as well. Samsung also works with Oracle with some of the files. It is showed that the Database Administrators are the people in the company that are responsible for the Database within. The Database Administration functions include defining and organizing database structures and contents, developing security procedures.

Samsung along with other companies have Annual reports that are created so the business and shareholders at the end of each fiscal year, reporting the financial results for the year. The Annual report is posted on the company’s website every year and visible for all to see. The manager gets this information from the previous database that were created through the files and reports created.

Online analytical processing (OLAP) is the manipulation of information to support decision making. Samsung uses OLAP to distinguish certain information about their products. It is used to track how the number of products sold, and how advertising those product help with the sale.

A data warehouse is a special form of a data base that contains information for the purpose of supporting decision-making tasks. Samsung uses them in conjuncture with OLAP to make better business decision. Like how to advertise to certain customers or how to market certain products.

Samsung only uses data mart in relation to its products, a data mart is a subset of a data warehouse which only focuses on a portion of the data warehouse. Samsung uses a multidimensional analysis tools type of data mining. Meaning it uses multiple columns and layers of product information. Such a location, time of the advertising, the year it was purchased. The database administration is responsible for databases, data warehouses and the data marts.Software such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access can be used to create data warehouse and databases of information for different products.

E-Commerce

A. What kind of e-Commerce are used?

Samsung Corporation is a Business to Business (B2B) e-Commerce. “The Business to Business occurs when a business sells products and services to customers who are primarily other businesses.” Samsung has a relationship with several corporations such as Best Buy, Target, and Radio Shack etc. Samsung is actually looking to expand their e-commerce sector to raise the profile of the Samsung products. Samsung doesn’t have a variety of individual stores to visit therefore; their products are spread throughout other stores. For an example Target purchases products such as TVs, Printers, DVD Players, and Cell Phones directly from Samsung to sell in the Target stores.

B. What types of internet business models are used?

Our corporation uses a mass customization business model. The Samsung website gives customers the advantage to pick and choose from a variety of models that are provided by this company. The most commonly known business that works with mass customization is www.dell.com. This company lets customers customize their computer the way that they want it. However, Samsung gives you a variety of products to choose from there is no doubt that you would not be able to find something that best fits you.

C. What type of marketing mix does it adopt?

Samsung marketing mix consists of search engines, online ads, and affiliate programs. Most consumers use search engines when looking for certain products. When you search for a TV or camera, Samsung pays to be displayed in the top 3 company results from their search. Samsung also uses affiliate programs such as Amazon. When you visit Samsung.com and search for a product, they offer a service that will tell you where you can purchase the product whether online or in store. Amazon is one of the online vendors listed. Samsung works as an affiliate program. An affiliate program is an arrangement made between two e-commerce sites that will direct viewers from one site to another. On the Samsung website it allows you to view their products and then it sends you to another website where the product is near you. This cuts out customers visiting and calling multiple stores in hope to find the correct product the customer is looking for.

D. What payments systems are used?

Since you cannot buy products directly off of the Samsung website, the payment system depends on how you purchase the product. If the customer decides to purchase the item online than a Smart Card can be used. A smart card is referred to as a Credit or Debit card or Electronic checks where available funds are removed directly from checking or savings accounts. Some online retailers also accept Financial Cybermediary. A great example of Financial Cybermediary is PayPal. Using PayPal an account is created by a customer and the account is used to purchase the products that the customer is looking to purchase by taking funds directly out of their checking or savings account. Samsung does not expect payments on their website, instead it directs you to an online vendor, or gives you the location of a store nearest you to pick up the item.

Business Strategy

Samsung business strategy is well defined as Porter’s Differentiation strategy. The key word that differentiates Samsung products from the rest of the market is Innovation. Samsung’s innovative technologies such as the super sleek LED TV and being the first on the market to launch the unique 3D LED TV, and two new home projectors the A800 with 3D technology, as well as the SP-H03 LED Pico projector, measuring less than three inches on each side very convenient as a personal projector. It always helps for the last minute meeting presentations. Samsung has proves once again that it is able to sustain the top of the market and furthermore anticipate customer's demands.

Samsung Electronics is one of the leading electronics companies and has been for some time. Samsung Electronics strives to achieve advantage over its competitors by offering a variety of products in this ever changing digital age. Not only do they offer electronic products, they also sell air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines. Samsung Electronics’ motto is, “We will devote out human resources and technologies to create superior products and services thereby contributing to a better global society.” However, the threat of new rivalry has been constant for Samsung. Competitors such as Sony, Panasonic and Nikon could be a major threat to Samsung Electronics.

To stay ahead of the competition, Samsung Electronics has expanded their Research & Development facilities, purchased DRAM Technology from another company to enhance their memory capabilities in digital cameras, games, PCs, etc. and have lowered their prices on many of their products. Samsung Electronics is one of the world’s top semiconductor suppliers, allowing them to maintain the number one spot in important markets such as memory and LCD panels. Samsung Electronics’ market share has been affected by new entrants segregating markets by offering products at a lower price. Samsung Electronics has exceptionally great relationships with their suppliers such as Walmart, Sears, Target and Lowes due to lengthy partnerships and a good supply chain management system. These supplies know too that Samsung Electronics depends on them because they don’t act as their own supplier. Because of their well-known brand name, customers feel comfortable buying Samsung Electronics’ products no matter what the cost may be.

Samsung Electronics also has to continuously differentiate their products as other competitors are offering the same things. For instance, the same type of cell phone could be sold from a couple of sources but Samsung could differentiate their cell phone by making it a touch screen with additional features. Samsung Electronics has 61 offices globally which gives them an edge over the competition. The CEO strives to hire more knowledgeable employees with the necessary expertise required in both the United States and abroad offering a great compensation plan.

The threat of substitute products that Samsung Electronic sales can be on the low end. For digital cameras, one major substitute could be the enhancement of cameras on cell phones. However, pictures from cell phones are not as clear as those of a digital camera. For the cell phone, the threat of substitute products could be low to high depending on the features. In today’s market, the iPhone is known as the best cell phone product because of its features but there are gaps in the communication applications and it is pricey over the high-end phones that Samsung offers. Recently, the substitutes for televisions, has been very high with the addition of HDTV and now televisions in 3D.

Samsung Electronics and SAP, which is a world leading provider of e-business software solutions, announced the successful implementation of a private exchange based on MarketSet™, the joint result from SAP and Commerce One, Inc. Through SAP, businesses around the world have improved their relationships with customers, streamlined their operations and achieved significant efficiencies throughout their supply chains. Samsung Electronics’ private exchange, called “Worldwide Trading Network” (WTN), is a single global network that links all of Samsung R/3® and legacy systems using one common platform.

Samsung works as a fully integrated company. Therefore, many IT personnel are located within other functional units. The major Business incentive that Samsung uses is their Customer Relationship Management (CRM). With their CRM tool, the CEO was aiming to upgrade its customer base and to induce profits. Samsung’s logo is “The Voice of the Customer” and their new initiative works hand and hand with it. Samsung chose to put a registration card in every product they sale. With this card you will register your product and it will also be put into your customer profile. This will help the corporation target its sales and promotions to again induce profit. Samsung uses a CRM tool by SAP, it is a foundation for marketing campaigns and it is aimed to improve customer service and increase the brand’s awareness. Samsung uses a Bottom-line initiative. With it being bottom-line, there is space for low cost reduction and top-line revenue. The supply chain management will organize the following Fulfillment, Logistics, Production, Revenue and Profit, and Cost & Price.

Samsung uses a fully integrated IT organization; it has over 24 network centers. Samsung has six research center in Korea and 18 additional centers in 9 different countries. By Samsung being fully integrated, Samsung has many IT personnel located with several different functional units. In these different units, they can approve they own budgets and research and implement a project.

Samsung have a vertical axis structural placement structure. It ranges from greatly decentralized to greatly centralize. It empowers employees throughout the organization to try new technologies in hopes of finding a few that will lead to some competitive advancement.

Samsung Post Record Operating Profit on Chip Prices

It is reported that Samsung posted record earnings in the last quarter of this year (2010). This was boosted by the increase in prices for computer-memory chips that came about as result of the demand that increased again. The company has capitalized on the chip business. The operating income for the second quarter increased 87% to 5 trillion won from 2.67 trillion won in the previous year and at the same time there was 14% sales gain. However, the company is faced with the challenge of sustaining earning growth in the midst of concerns that the prices might have reached the peak and the fiscal crisis of Europe will persist.

The growth in the company’s chip business earnings is expected to extend through the third quarter of the year and this will be through the help of the increasing profit coming from the chip division. As it is reported, the better performance in the second quarter as compared to the first quarter may be attributed to the semi-conductors offsetting the poor performance in the mobile phones.

Samsung also has a target of more than doubling its share in the smart phone market and this will be aided by bringing in the market the Galaxy S model. In the current day, the company’s share in this market is only 4 percent. This new model is likely to bring down the level of skepticism of the investors in regard to the handset business of Samsung. It is projected that the company will sell over 7 million units before the end of this year and this is projected to bring in 3 billion US dollars in revenue. It is reported that Samsung overtook the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia Ovi, in the shipments of low-end handsets in the first quarter of this year to Western Europe (Park).

The Samsung Company has been able to put in place appropriate business strategy that has enabled it to realize an increase in revenues. The company has capitalized on the sale of computer-memory chips and these have been sold at increased prices resulting from an increase in the demand. As a business strategy, the company has engaged in investing more in plants and equipment than any other technology company in order to widen the base in chips since this company serves other large companies like Apple and Dell Inc. that are involved in computer manufacturing. This company is also targeting to more than double its share in the smart phone market and this will be aided by bringing in the market the Galaxy S model and this new model is expected to bring down the level of skepticism of the investors in regard to the handset business of Samsung.
